Derrick
Michael Oliver Callender is a born Guyanese who has gone the full
cycle. He is an accomplished Guitarist whose unique style is la fashioned
by his years of travel. Derrick grew up in Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown.
At age six he was introduced to playing music by his aunt Serena Callender
on a piano that she owned. This aunt, he boasts, was a renowned soprano
who was the first coloured person to perform at the State House, the
home of the colonial Governor General.
He
was introduced to the guitar by Anthony Francis and Chatti Cristiant
and his talent was sought after by many of the popular bands of
the day. He spent some years in the neighboring country of Brazil
where he adopted classical styles and was influenced by the samba.
On
his return from Brazil he played with bands like the Love People
and Black Frost before moving to Europe via Suriname. He spent twelve
years touring Europe playing in Clubs and pubs.
